Today we honour those brave men and womenwho helped fortify the kingdom by immortalizing their name with all things ‘traditional’ to the Rwandan culture.

Gakondo, an emblematic word from the Kinyarwanda language loosely meaning “traditional” has woven itself into the Rwandan culture after centuries’ worth of rich and diverse legacies. The actual origin of the word is credited with the first king of RWANDA kingdom, GIHANGA Ngomijana, who created the first prevailing militia of renowned glaives given the name “GAKONDO”.
